Numerous honors were given to the movie, including nominations for the Academy Awards for Best Original Score, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design. Seven sequels were released after it, starting in 2002 with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and concluding in 2011 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
The film's first release window, which was on the weekend of July 4, 2001, was so constrained by Warner Bros. that a number of potential directors withdrew from consideration. The time was pushed back to 16 November 2001 because of time restrictions.
