Harry Potter 3 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Based on J. K. Rowling's 1999 book of the same name, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a 2004 fantasy film produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. The movie was produced by Chris Columbus and David Heyman, with a screenplay by Steve Kloves. It is the third installment in the Harry Potter film series and the sequel to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets from 2002. Harry Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe, is joined by Ron Weasley, played by Rupert Grint, and Hermione Granger, played by Emma Watson.

The story centers on Harry's third year at Hogwarts and his search for the truth about his past, particularly the relationship between Sirius Black, a recently freed Azkaban prisoner, and Harry and his deceased parents.

The Harry Potter movies' production schedule changed to an 18-month period with Prisoner of Azkaban. From a roster that also included Callie Khouri and Kenneth Branagh, Cuarón was chosen as the director. The film's cast included actors from previous installments as well as newcomers Gary Oldman, David Thewlis, and Emma Thompson.

Due to Richard Harris's passing in 2002, Michael Gambon played Professor Albus Dumbledore for the first time. At Leavesden Film Studios, principal photography commenced in February 2003. With sets constructed in Scotland and scenes filmed in London, it was the first installment in the series to make considerable use of actual locales. The shooting was finished in November 2003.

The movie was made available to the public on May 31 in the UK and June 4 in North America. It was the first Harry Potter movie to be released in IMAX theaters to use IMAX technology. With a global box office tally of $797.5 million, Prisoner of Azkaban is the second-highest-grossing movie of 2004. Cuarón's direction of the movie and the performances of the principal actors won recognition. It is regarded by critics and fans alike as the best Harry Potter movie and is credited with bringing about a noticeable shift in the franchise's tone and directing style.

At the 77th Academy Awards in 2004, it was up for two nominations: Best Original Music Score and Best Visual Effects. In 2005, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was released as a sequel.

Production of the Harry Potter movies changed to an eighteen-month cycle with the release of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as producer David Heyman noted, "to give each [feature] the time it needs." Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) directors Chris Columbus chose against returning to oversee the third installment because he wanted to spend more time with his kids.

The appearance of Hagrid's hut was dramatically altered by the utilization of actual locales. The surrounding scenery for Prisoner of Azkaban altered from being entirely flat to being on a hillside. In contrast to the first two movies, when characters always wore uniforms, in Prisoner of Azkaban, characters frequently wore contemporary streetwear. Some sets were taken from past movies, utilized again, or used in more than one setting. The classrooms for Divination and Defense Against the Dark Arts were shot on the same set. The Flourish & Blotts set from Chamber of Secrets, which itself had been updated from the Ollivanders set from the first movie, served as the basis for the Honeydukes set.

Key visual effects shots for the movie were handled by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and Framestore, and other VFX work was created by The Moving Picture Company, Cinesite, and Double Negative. There was initial anticipation when it was revealed that Cuarón would be directing Prisoner of Azkaban that his collaborating composer Patrick Doyle (who would score the ensuing movie) would provide the soundtrack. However, Cuarón kept John Williams, whose third and final film in the series he would soundtrack. Cuarón intended the soundtrack to go a different direction than the previous two, therefore it differed significantly from them.
