American professional basketball player Kyrie Andrew Irving (/ˈkaɪri/; Lakota: Ȟéla, lit. 'Little Mountain'), who plays for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association, was born on March 23, 1992. (NBA). Following his selection by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the first overall choice in the 2011 NBA Draft, he was voted the Rookie of the Year. He was a three-time All-NBA Team selection and a seven-time All-Star. In 2016, he and the Cavaliers won the NBA title.

The son of American expatriates Drederick Irving and Elizabeth (née Larson) Irving, Irving was born in Melbourne, Australia. His sisters are London, his younger sister, and Asia, his older sister. At Boston University, Drederick's father Shawn Teague, the father of Jeff and Marquis Teague, and coach Rick Pitino were also basketball players. Irving's father relocated to Australia to play professionally for the Bulleen Boomers in the SEABL after finishing his college career. Before moving to the US when he was two years old, Irving and his family were residents in the Melbourne suburb of Kew. He is a citizen of both Australia and the United States.

When Irving was four years old, his mother—an African American and Lakota—died of a disease, and his father remarried—to Shetellia Riley, who as of March 2022 is Kyrie Irving's agent. Irving was raised in West Orange, New Jersey, and frequently went to watch his father play in an adult league. In the fourth grade, while on a field trip at Continental Airlines Arena, he made the promise that he would play in the NBA, which served as his inspiration.

Prior to signing with the Cavaliers in 2011, Irving played basketball for the Duke Blue Devils in college. He was named the 2014 All-Star Game's Most Valuable Player (MVP). Irving's game-winning three-point field goal in the 2016 NBA Finals sealed the Cavaliers' historic victory over the Golden State Warriors. In 2017, after making it to another Finals, Irving asked for a trade and was dealt to the Boston Celtics.

He played for the Celtics for two seasons before signing a free agent contract with the Brooklyn Nets in 2019. Additionally, he has competed for the American national team, where he has won gold at both the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He succeeded Pau Gasol as vice-president of the National Basketball Players Association in February 2020.

He is an active benefactor to his Lakota people on the tribe and is an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. He has written, directed, and played the part of "Uncle Drew" in a series of commercials, which was later made into a 2018 feature film. He voiced characters in We Bare Bears (2016) and Family Guy in addition to appearing in Kickin' It (2012) as himself (2018).
